Palermo

Following his breakthrough at the 2007 South American Youth Championship, several major teams were reportedly interested in signing Cavani, including Juventus and AC Milan. However, on 29 January 2007, Palermo chairman Maurizio Zamparini announced the signing of the promising Uruguayan. The offer was officially confirmed on January 31,  in the amount of 4.475 million euros.[10] Cavani made his debut on 11 March 2007 in a home league match against Fiorentina,  coming on in the fifty-fifth minute with his group in a 1-0 win and scoring an impressive equalizer just 15 minutes later, a goal, reminiscent of Marco van Basten's kick in the 1988 European Football Championship final. In his 2nd season with Rosanero, Cavani finished first in the group with Fabrizio Miccoli and Amauri.

After Amauri's departure to Juventus in June 2008, Cavani strengthened his position in the starting line-up, forming a partnership with Fabrizio Miccoli and scoring 14 goals in the 2008-09 season, earning the nickname "El Matador" due to his composure in front of goal. He retained his place in the 2009-10 season below new boss Walter Zenga and, in addition, below successor Delio Rossi, he played an important role in the Serie A that took Palermo to European qualification and potential qualification to the UEFA Champions League with the final games. In April 2010, he signed a new contract with Palermo, valid until June 2014.

Napoli

2010–11: Move to Europe

In July 2010, Cavani signed for Napoli. The transition, however, turned into a mortgage of five million euros plus an alternative/obligation to shop directly for 12 million euros,  making the entire bid 17 million euros. After making his debut for Napoli as a substitute in the previous sport, Cavani scored two goals in his first start as Napoli beat Elfsborg 2-0 in the UEFA Europa League and qualified for the main match. He then started his Serie A campaign with Napoli in fantastic style, scoring a controversial goal against Fiorentina just seven minutes later, with replays showing the ball barely crossing the road. Cavani also scored on his debut against Bari and then added a late winner against Sampdoria, meaning he has scored in his first four appearances with Napoli.

On 26 September, Cavani came here as a late alternative with 30 minutes remaining in the game against Cesena, which Napoli lost 1-0. After helping to equalize, he scored two big goals and the score ended 4-1. It was assumed that Cavani would share the lead as the league's top scorer along with Internazionale's Samuel Eto'o.  Cavani's partnership with fellow strikers Ezequiel Lavezzi and Marek Hamsik led to the Italian media dubbing them the "Three Tenors" after the famous singing group of the same name. On 15 December, Cavani scored a 92nd-minute goal against Steaua București to help his side to a 1-0 win and move beyond the Europa League. Dressed in a simple suit that was hung on Romanian soil, he scored the goal, equalizing the score in the 97th minute. On 9 January 2011, Cavani scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 win over Juventus, scoring 0.33 goals with a header. On 30 January, Cavani scored another hat-trick, this time in a 4-0 win over Sampdoria. Cavani maintained his exceptional form by scoring a goal against Roma as Napoli won 2-0.

On 20 March, Cavani scored another goal in a 2-1 win over Cagliari. The win kept them within three points of leaders AC Milan with eight video games remaining. On 3 April, Cavani scored another hat-trick in a 4-3 comeback win over Lazio, losing 2-0 and 3-2 at some stage. He also became the league's top scorer in a single season in the history of Napoli, scoring 25 goals in Serie A. On 8 May, in a 2-1 away loss to Lecce, he received a red card for two rule violations. He satirically applauded the judge after the ruling, and then passed a two-person traffic ban. As Napoli had additional video games of the season, it was assumed that his season was over and that he would no longer be able to regain a major role in the Serie A charts, as Antonio Di Natale surpassed him with 26 goals. On 19 May, Cavani signed a new 5-year contract extension at Napoli until 2016.

International career

Youth

In January 2007, Cavani turned into decided to join the Uruguay country-wide below-20 team to play within the 2007 South American Youth Championship in Paraguay. He finished the tournament as top scorer with seven goals in nine video games, supporting Uruguay to finish in third place, thereby earning them an area within the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

Senior

2010 World Cup and 2011 Copa América

On 6 February 2008, Cavani made his first appearance in Uruguay's senior group, in a 2-2 draw with Colombia. He scored from his spot in a counter-attack from a corner.

On June 22, 2010, in the 2010 FIFA World Cup final, Cavani scored a goal for Luis Suarez in a scoreless victory over Mexico 1: 0. Uruguay qualified for Group A and advanced to the playoffs.
