 The 2000s were marked by the dominance of the so-called "Top Four" clubs. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester United have been at the top of the table for the better part of a decade, thus securing some qualification for the UEFA Champions League. At one point during this period, only four different golf clubs could qualify for the competition: Leeds United (1999-2000), Newcastle United (2001-02 and 2002-03), Everton (2004-05), and Tottenham Hotspur (2009-10) - all finished last in the Champions League, with the exception of Newcastle in the 2002-03 season, which finished 1/3.

After the 2003-04 season, Arsenal earned the nickname "The Invincibles" because it became a major contributor to the Premier League's marketing campaign without giving up on the unmarried sport, the simplest case of it ever happening in the Premier League.

In May 2008, Kevin Keegan said that the dominance of the "Top Four" threatens the division: "This league has a chance to become one of the most uninteresting, but first-class leagues in the world."  Premier League Chief Executive Richard Scudamore said in defence: "There are a lot of special fights going on in the Premier League, depending on whether you are at the top, in the middle or at the bottom, which makes it exciting."

Between 2005 and 2012, seven of the 8 Champions League finals had a Premier League representative, and only the "Top Four" golf equipment reached this stage. Liverpool (2005), Manchester United (2008) and Chelsea (2012) won the competition during this period, while Arsenal (2006), Liverpool (2007), Chelsea (2008), and Manchester United (2009 and 2011) lost the Champions League final. Leeds United was the best non-top four team to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League in the 2000-01 season. The Champions League semi-finals in 2006-07, 2007-09, and 2008-09 had 3 Premier League groups, and this feat was only completed 5 times (along with Serie A in 2002-03 and La Liga in 1999-2000).


In addition, between the 1999-2000 and 2009-10 seasons, four Premier League teams reached the final of the UEFA Cup or Europa League, and the best Liverpool managed to win the tournament in 2001. Arsenal (2000), Middlesbrough (2006), and Fulham (2010) did not qualify for the final.

Although the institution's dominance has somewhat diminished after this era with the emergence of Manchester City and Tottenham, despite all the points won in the Premier League, they still remain clear by a small margin. As of the end of the 2018-19 season—the twenty—seventh Premier League season - Liverpool, fourth in the all-time points table, were more than 250 points ahead of the next team, Tottenham Hotspur. They are also the lightest teams to maintain a prevailing average of over 50% throughout their time in the Premier League.
